Marketing Vs Selling
In my experience dealing with retailers and distributors across the country, I have notice a common misunderstanding. Namely, marketing is confused to be one and the same with selling. Marketing is akin to, but not the same as selling. Especially when we are referring to email marketing and social media techniques. What many brands do, is sell to their audience, but don’t market to them. They as in an email or on Facebook, “We have this product on sale! Look at us!” But Selling is not marketing.
Marketing is about brand. About perceived value. About image. Marketing starts with the customer and shows how products or services fit their lifestyle. Marketing tells stories and creates demand. Marketers asks questions such as “who is our audience?”, “what pains them?” Marketing makes the customer know, like and trust you.
Selling is about products or services not the customer. Selling is pitching specifications or benefits of a product or service and then convincing a potential customer to buy it. Selling leverages the demand marketing creates.
Now, Selling is a great thing! But is not marketing.
